This is an aerial view of Yellowknife, just as you are about to touch down at the airport.  The tall red building on the horizon is the headframe of the Nerco Con Mine (consolidated from several smaller mining companies during the early years); one of the 2 gold mines within the boundary of the city.   Mining is a very important part of the local economy.

Although the population is less than 20,000 and we are relatively isolated we have services and facilities normally found only in much larger urban centers.  The part of town in this photo is 'suburbia'.  Most people work in the downtown core - a distance of about 3 kilometres (1 1/2 miles) from here.

Aside from all the snow, it could be any street anywhere.  The house with the flagpole 'Christmas tree' is our house.  It sort of lights up the general area.  This is part of 'suburbia'.

Not too far from our backyard is wilderness and Great Slave Lake (one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world).  It's definitely a good place to live and work.
But I don't think I'd want to retire here!  The winter can be extremely long, cold and dark.
BHP (Broken Hill Properties) recently opened the FIRST diamond mine in Canada just to the north of the city and we now have another very important resource industry beginning to grow in the Northwest Territories.

These are exciting times to be living in Canada's North.

And we do have real nifty license plates -

Click on the license plate to see the plates I have for sale.
